PEDESTRIAN BRIDGES

PEDESTRIAN BRIDGES

Just as vehicular bridges are required to carry vehicles, pedestrian bridges are required to carry people. Pedestrian bridges are typically used in order to ferry pedestrians across roadways, rivers and wetlands.

In many cases, a sidewalk with a non-mountable curb is placed on one or both sides of the deck, allowing for a mixed-use traffic consisting of both pedestrians and bicycles to get across.

However, in some cases, especially along trails, bridges carry only pedestrian and associated mixed use traffic, including but not limited to bicycles, track maintenance vehicles and cherry pickers. Hence, these bridges have to be designed to different loads, and compliant with ADA requirements.
